Broken English

Have you ever heard a Bob Marley song, and wondered why, if he speaks english why do I only understand half of what he says? Well that`s beacuse in the Caribbean like in Jamaica, St Thomas, the speak Broken English...

Definition:
A pejorative term for a limited registerEnglish used by a non-native speaker. of
Broken English may be fragmented, incomplete, and/or marked by faulty syntax and inappropriate diction.
Some info:
Creole languages are found all over the world on every continent. When two or more languages come into contact to form a new language a Creole language is born. Some type of human "upheaval" that forces people to find a way to communicate, without using their own languages, stimulates the creation of a Creole language. In the case of Creole languages in the Caribbean, the "upheaval" is the past history of slavery. Most Creole languages are based on one language. In Jamaica the African slaves were thrown into a situation where the only common means of communication was English, or at least broken English, therefor Jamaican Creole has a majority of its roots in English (Sebba 1, 1996). Essential words which people could not find an English name for, such as people, things (like plants and animals) and activities (especially religious ones) were taken from a variety of West African languages.

Examples:
Standard English Variants
thing t’ing, ting
nothing nutten, not’n’, notin’
no nuh, noh, nu
can’t cyan, cyaan, kaan, kean
(be)cause caw, cau’, caa

  • An gaan hustle ohside noh,
  • For shi like see di money come een,

Online Newspaper/Magazine

9.
An online newspaper, also known as a web newspaper, is a newspaper that exists on the World Wide Web or Internet, either separately or as an online version of a printed periodical.
Going online created more opportunities for newspapers, such as competing with broadcast journalism in presenting breaking news in a more timely manner. The credibility and strong brand recognition of well-established newspapers, and the close relationships they have with advertisers, are also seen by many in the newspaper industry as strengthening their chances of survival.[1] The movement away from the printing process can also help decrease costs.

FORUMS

8. Warwick Forums is a large group of web discussion forums that are grouped into categories according to their content and intended audiences.  People can engage in discussion by posting messages on relevant topics and replying to messages already posted.

EBOOKS

7. An electronic book (also e-book, ebook, digital book) is a text and image-based publication in digital form produced on, published by, and readable on computers or other digital devices.[1] Sometimes the equivalent of a conventional printed book, e-books can also be born digital. The Oxford Dictionary of English defines the e-book as "an electronic version of a printed book,"[2] but e-books can and do exist without any printed equivalent. E-books are usually read on dedicated hardware devices known as e-Readers or e-book devices. Personal computers and some cell phones can also be used to read e-books

AUDIO BOOKS

6. One of the great benefits of being able to record sound is to make books available for listening. With the advent of audio recordings, many people were able to hear literary classics read aloud, and to experience them for the first time.
Audio books are, of course, books read aloud and recorded to be listened to on some kind of player. As sound technology has changed, audio books have changed, as well. No longer are they available only on volumes consisting of 14 or 15 vinyl LPs. Now, books are available on audio cassette or CD.
Talking books are books created for the use of the visually impaired. They are produced in a variety of formats, and some need a special player to be used. Many visually impaired people are able to receive players free, and these machines enable them to play their talking books independently, without the help of a sighted person. CD technology has revolutionized the talking book industry, since data can be compressed to fit much more information on a single disc. Many talking book players will also play music CDs, so the visually impaired person has a multi-use machine.

HOT POTATOES

5. Hot Potatoes is a suite of programs published by Victoria University and Half-Baked Software. Teachers use the Hot Potatoes programs to create educational materials, especially exercises and tests. All these materials can be produced in the form of web pages, and the web pages can be uploaded to hotpotatoes.net very simply, from within the Hot Potatoes programs. hotpotatoes.net has been created in response to requests from users of Hot Potatoes for a way of recording results from Hot Potatoes exercises. But as well as providing this basic function, it has grown into a fully-fledged Virtual Learning Environment, with password-protected teacher and student accounts, and automatic uploading of documents and other files from within Hot Potatoes, and other programs which create online exercises. Put simply, hotpotatoes.net is the perfect hosting solution for any Hot Potatoes user who doesn't have time to become a web design wizard.

YOUTUBE VIDEOS

4. YouTube is a video-sharing website on which users can upload, share, and view videos, created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005.[3]
The company is based in San Bruno, California, and uses Adobe Flash Video technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video content, including movie clips, TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video blogging and short original videos. Most of the content on YouTube has been uploaded by individuals, although media corporations including CBS, BBC, Vevo, Hulu and other organizations offer some of their material via the site, as part of the YouTube partnership program.[4]
Unregistered users may watch videos, and registered users may upload an unlimited number of videos. Videos that are considered to contain potentially offensive content are available only to registered users 18 and older. In November 2006, YouTube, LLC was bought by Google Inc. for $1.65 billion, and now operates as a subsidiary of Google.

WEBQUEST

3. A webquest is an assignment which asks students to use the World Wide Web to learn about and/or synthesize their knowledge a specific topic. A “true” webquest, as originally designed by Bernie Dodge and Tom March, requires synthesis of the new knowledge by accomplishing a “task,” often to solve a hypothetical problem or address a real-world issue. Simpler web activities designed for students to investigate and collect new knowledge from web-based sources can also be a more engaging and effective replacement for read-the-chapter-and-complete-the-review-questions.  This tutorial will walk you through the basics to create a simple or more elaborate activity.
  • The assignment can be given on paper, certainly the simplest and most portable option. For an example, click here to print out a simple "on paper" webquest on Laura Ingalls Wilder. (You'll need Adobe's Acrobat Reader, which is available from the TeachersFirst Toolbox.
  • A webquest assignment can also be given on the web itself by sending students to a web page which serves as the "home base" for the student’s information search. For an example, click here to see an "on the web" webquest bsed on Harper Lee's book To Kill A Mockingbird.
  • You can also present a webquest using some other multi-media software such as Hyperstudio or Powerpoint.
The quality of your webquest depends on the ideas and thought that go into in more than on flashy presentation technologies. It’s easy to create a mediocre webquest, and it’s far more difficult to create quest that really works well.

WIKI

2. WIKI...
The simplest online database that could possibly work.
Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly.
Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself.
Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by nontechnical users.

A Couple of Tips to make English Teaching Easier...

1. PODCAST

The word “podcasting” is a portmanteau combining the words “broadcasting” and “iPod.” In case you have had your head in the sand recently or don’t keep up with popular technology an iPod is a portable music player produced by Apple Computers.
What Makes Podcasting Different?
When I first heard of podcasting I didn’t understand what made it different from simply searching and then downloading a music file and listening to it much like I had been doing for years with MP3 music tracks. I had a knowledge gap because I still didn’t understand RSS and content syndication. After playing with RSS feed readers (which you should know about if you followed my instructions and read my primer article about RSS before reading this article) I understood the difference between searching and downloading music files and subscribing to podcasts. It’s all about having the files come to you through syndication instead of you going to the files through search.
You subscribe to podcasts much like you subscribe to blogs. In fact often podcasts are distributed through a blog and provided your feed reading software handles podcasts you should be able to either instruct your reader to download new podcasts whenever they become available or manually choose which podcasts you want to download by clicking a link to the audio file. These files can then be listened to on your computer or you can transfer them to your portable player to listen to later. Some podcast feed reading software are configured to download and transfer the podcast directly to your portable player automatically so you can plug it in and walk away a few minutes later with your latest podcasts downloaded and ready to digest.
